Lanzhou, Wednesday

We started the day as usual, an early trip to the breakfast buffet.  We always get Shi Wu a plate of things like fried rice, and this morning, steak, but she always has a bowl of congee.  This is millet congee and Froggy and Little Panda both came to breakfast so they could see what congee looks like.

Waiting for our guide to get the tickets to get into the Gansu Province museum.

The museum has an amazing collection of things from the ancient Silk Road.  I think our guide was surprised about our enthusiasm for the museum.  Hannah and I loved it.  Here she is with the statue of the man who pioneered the Silk Road.  I forget his name, but it took him 12 years or so to make the trip, because he got thrown into prison.

Here is the most famous artifact--the flying horse found in a tomb at Wuwei.  It is a bronze sculpture, about 8 inches tall.

Shi Wu liked holding her admission ticket but museums are not her favorite thing at this point in her life.  Here she is looking at an ancient set of Buddha and bodhisatva statues.  They didn't excite her very much.  We took several hundred pictures of other artifacts, but it takes too long to upload, so you can beg us to share those with you when we get home.

Outside the museum.  This was probably the cleanest building we have seen in China.  It was immaculate inside and out.

Too much history for one little girl.

I had to take a picture of this.  How many times do you get to see the Lanzhou Bright Eye Hospital Dispensing Glasses Center?

Lunch at a local restaurant.  Shi Wu got a special straw to use in her glass of hot water.

These are some of the dishes.  Pickled vegetables with little rolls to put it in, some kind of little blobs with tofu in them, which the guide said was very good for children and Shi Wu didn't like, and cabbage topped with rice noodles.  Hannah and I also each ordered bowls of different kinds of noodles.  The meal cost close to 15 dollars.

Look at how I managed to get a big bite with my chopsticks!
